Swachh Bharat Abhiyan or Clean India Mission has been started as a national campaign by the Indian Government. It has been launched to 4041 statutory towns aiming maintained cleanliness of streets, roads and infrastructure of the country. Narendra Modi, The Prime Minister of India has officially started this campaign on 2nd of October in 2014 at the Rajghat, New Delhi. It is the biggest neatness campaign ever in India when around 3 million government employees comprising students took part in the cleanliness activities.
Prime Minister of India has nominated nine people like the ambassador of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. They are Salman Khan, Anil Ambani, Kamal Hassan, comedian Kapil Sharma, Priyanka Chopra, Baba Ramdev, Sachin Tendulkar, Shashi Tharoor and the team of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. Many brand ambassadors have been chosen by the PM to start and promote the Abhiyan of Swachh Bharat in various fields. Actor Aamir Khan was invited to come on the date of launching of the campaign. PM had also named some other people (Manoj Tiwari, Kailash Kher, Raju Srivastava, Akhilesh Yadav, Swami Rambhadracharya, Mohammad Kaif, Deviprasad Dwivedi, Manu Sharma, Suresh Raina) on 8th of November in 2014 and (Sourav Ganguly, Kiran Bedi, Padmanabha Acharya, Sonal Mansingh, Ramoji Rao, etc) on 25th of December in 2014.
The goal of this campaign is to join every Indian person from all walks of life by making the structure of branching of a tree. Swachh Bharat mission aimed to build individual sanitary latrines for household purposes for the men who are living under poverty line, altering dry latrines into low-cost sanitary latrines, safe and secure bathing, set up sanitary marts, confer facility of hand pumps, make drains, disposal of solid and liquid wastes, enlarge health and education awareness, consult family and environmental sanitation facilities etc.
Besides Swachh Bharat mission, earlier many awareness programmes related to the environmental sanitation and personal cleanliness were started by the Indian government but could not be so influential to make India a clean India. The most important aims of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan are converting insanitary toilets into pour flush toilets, removing the trend of open defecation, removal of manual scavenging, proper disposal of solid and liquid wastes, facilitating the participation of private sectors towards cleanliness facilities, bring behavioral changes among people, enlarge awareness about sanitation.
Some other programmes like Swachh Bharat apps, Real-time monitoring system, Swachh Bharat Run, Swachh Bharat short film, Swachh Bharat Nepal – Swasth Bharat Nepal Abhiyan etc have been beginning to support the aim of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan actively. To keep it up and make this drive successful, Finance Ministry of India has started a programme namely Swachh Bharat cess. According to this, everyone has to pay .5% more service tax on all the services in India (50 paise per 100 rupees) which will go to Clean India Mission. National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) and tens of other river cleansing projects have also been launched as per Swachh Bharat Abhiyan targets.
